A Nice Email

Hey Y'all! I received this email from a good friend of mine and I wanted to share it with you. It really has a lot of meaning and can make you think about what kind of friend or family you are to others. I hope that when I'm gone, that I will have left a good legacy behind me and that my friends and family will miss me and forget about any of my short comings when they think of me. I know I'm not perfect, but I do love hard and truly care about the human race and not just my friends and family.

I'm passing this on to all my real friends and family. And to just clarify one point: Just because I cannot feel your shoulder or you my tears, and visa versa, through cyber space, doesn't mean that I cannot feel your pain or your empathy in our emails.

Happy Tuesday!

Hey y’all! It is a Happy Tuesday for me! NO, the squirrels are not gone. I called the critter place today and they said Thursday afternoon and Friday that they are planning to come out and begin the restoration of the house and setup of the traps. I’m happy because Kim, my oldest daughter, came down to see me today. It was just the two of us and we went to the small town just south of me called Monroe. For some reason that is beyond both of us, we have never gone into the town; we’ve been to the local Wal-Mart and such but not the downtown area. Oh what fun we are going to have this summer! There are all kinds of little boutiques and consignment shops and bistros and salons. We went into this marvelous dress shop that had items I’ve not seen before and they are so reasonable. I bought a spring purse, a two piece blouse set, a pair of crocks, a dress and a sweater for Kim and it was all under $100! The dress is adorable and looks so good on her. It is done in predominantly pinks and some greens with a tiny bit of white; it is lined and has 1 inch wide straps. She had to dash back home so I didn’t get a photo of it. We had a great lunch at a bistro that fed us in style for (are you ready for this?) $5 each plus our drink! It was such fun walking in the sunshine and greeting people on the sidewalks and in the stores. The next time we go I’m going to bring my camera (a la Vicki C) and take some shots of the beautiful little shops and such. There was a curio shop that we passed on the way out of the town that we’re going back to check out soon. It had loads and loads of beautiful vases, jugs, and dishes in the window. It’s the first time I’ve actually enjoyed an excursion out in a long time-I’m a definite ‘home body.’

After Kim dropped me back home, I went out back to take some photos of my neighbor’s roses that are tumbling over their white fence.

My neighbors are all yard and garden nuts and it drives them bonkers to live next to the ‘black thumb’ of the neighborhood. I get the best of views for no work what so ever! The sun is so strong now that it is actually bleaching the color out of the flowers!

When I got back in I decided to take a photo of my beautiful store bought Gerbera Daisies. Their color is so vibrant and they are so large and just shout “Spring!”

I finished a layout yesterday! Yea, me! I did it for a ‘we can build it’ challenge at Scrapbook Graphics. I had to use a solid background, a round cornered, printed photo mat, an acrylic element, a metal clip, and 3 colors. I think it turned out sweet of my long time gone Aunt Margaret when she was a young woman. I need to do more layouts and stop blog hopping so much! LOL! I get on this computer and the time just flies by when I’m online. Anyway, here it is:

The Nerve of Some People!

Like this wall hanging? This wonderful photo was sent to me by my EX-friend, Kara Ward! And that was after I sent her one of the sweet and gushy notes I am known for (LOL)! Don't you think I get enough abuse from the live critters, Kara? Now what do you think of this young lady sending this to your tired, old, friend Liv? All together now: pppphhhhhhggggggttttt!


Actually, it gave me quite the laugh! It's nice when others help you laugh at yourself-breaks up that tension at the back of the neck. The truth is that I have always loved squirrels, and they me. When I lived in Virginia, I had squirrels coming at me from every direction! I fed them and they would all wait in the front yard for me to get home and then mob me when I got out of the car! I also had Blue Jays that would scout for them by sitting up at the front of our neighborhood then fly in front of my car leading the way back home, screeching at the top of their little lungs. Yes, just call me Cinderella! I have photos of my little menagerie. Maybe I should share them? I'll have to dig them out of those old photos books that have never been digitized.

We were required to use some papers and elements that the wonderful Meredith Fenwick donated for the project which included the papers you see and those wonderful clear alpha. Since I was showcasing her designs I made the layout simple. Those are my four grandchildren in August 2000.

I'm Giving Up

They are really plucking my last nerve! You know the patches I made to the electrical cable? (see the photos in the last post) One (or more) of the little varmints pulled the tape and piece of protective water hose off and now they are running around up there knocking it around in the eaves! They woke me up just at dawn and I think the momma had some more babies during the night because I could hear her squealing or crying or purring-whatever it's called. My face is still messed up from the insulation from when I made the repairs too. I am kind of sleeping with one eye and one ear open because of the chewed electrical cable which I cannot do anything about (professionally) until after the Critter Control people make the repairs and get the squirrels out of the attic. Okay, all my online and blogging friends, let's hold hands and pray that I keep calm and don't go postal over the weekend. Thanks, I needed that.

I'm back (continued from earlier post)

Hey. Well, I've taken some photos of the mess upstairs; I don't know why but I feel better when I talk to y'all. Maybe it's because you all pay more attention to me than others do. Anyway, see where I was crawling on my belly? My face has started burning from the fiberglass, even though I showered right after doing this.


I am so afraid of fire. I don't want to harm the little varmints, I just want my life back.

Now I'm Scared!

I have to vent some more. This morning the momma squirrel was building more on her new nest and driving me batty as usual. You know that she is there and making all that noise but you can't see her to actually know what she's doing. Anyway, up to the attic I went to fuss at her and maybe get some peace for fifteen minutes or so. Shining my flashlight back into the corner where I heard her, I saw bare copper wire! "Dear Lord, please don't let me lose my home or life because of squirrels." I kept saying this over and over while I was trying to come up with a way to crawl over into that corner, under the eaves, to wrap the wiring that they exposed. So, I went downstairs, put on old clothing and lace up shoes (for stability), then psyched myself up for the task. I am claustrophobic; have been all my life ( a looong time). I didn't have anything light weight and sturdy to place over the ceiling beams except for an old crib I bought for my first grandchild 18 years ago! I got down on my old knees and pushed it toward the far corner; luckily it moved fairly easily. I got my electrical tape, carpet knife, flashlight, and a piece of water hose that I split to give further protection to the wiring. I started hyperventilating and said a prayer to calm myself and to let God know that I needed Him for this. So down on my belly to scoot to that corner and check the damage. Blown-in fiberglass insulation is nasty! I know I breathed it into my lungs and it was all over my face, neck, hands, and clothes. Well, I found numerous chewed places on the power cable; I wrapped two that had been chewed to the copper and slipped the piece of hose over the worse one for extra protection. But, y'all, I know there are many more places throughout the attic that I cannot see! What should I do? Call an electrician for sure but aren't they going to say that I have to have the entire house rewired? I'm so stressed right now . . . I'm going to come back and finish this post later.

"The Critters"

Hey Y'all! The Critter Control guy showed up as promised and did the inspection of the premises. I stayed with him the entire inspection so that I could see what he was doing and to also ask questions. Did you know that squirrels pee on their desired territory? Makes me feel all warm and gushy inside just knowing the furry little varmints call my home a toilet! So, half an hour later we sit down to go over the 'finds' and come up with a figure. We found one main entry point and one large nest (I found another one myself when I went back into the attic later). It looks like she has had two litters up there since Thanksgiving! Oh, Tim (the Critter Control guy) says that the male never comes near where the female has her home; she's been making all the noise herself along with her babies. Now I need to tell you that this inspection and sit-down cost $189, up front. The fascia on the house has a large gap in it just beneath the roofing everywhere there are gutters. (Thank goodness I do have four peaks that I don't have to worry about!) There are 224 feet of fascia that needs to be covered with 'critter proof' metal mesh that will cost $10 per foot, installed. There is a roof ventilation fan that also needs a mesh cover that adds on another $199 and then the repair of the main entry point. All that comes to a sub total of $2568 plus the initial $189, plus $59 per squirrel that is caught in the traps. Looks like these lovely creatures are costing me about $3,000.00 to get rid of and it could be more, depending on how many squirrels are caught in the three traps that are going to be set around the main entry point. Yes this is a lot of info but I want you all to learn from my experience and do not wait to call for help when you first hear anything in your attics or crawlspaces! I signed off on all the paper work and the job will start sometime next week as Critter Control is booked pretty solidly for the next five business days. I pray I can hold out until they are all gone. But I must be honest with you, I have felt the urge to borrow someone's six shooter and blast those varmints right out of my hair!

About the snakes: it seems that they could also have made their way into my home via the fascia gaps. Snakes can crawl up brick walls, I know because we caught one going up the wall by the master bath last year. But, Tim says that the snakes are much more likely to have made their way into the house by following the plumbing and coming in under the kitchen cabinets! There is no way to stop them except to remove the base cabinets and plug all the gaps around the plumbing and wiring then replace the cabinets and hook the plumbing back up. Sounds lovely doesn't it? I thought that when I made the decision to build the house on a slab instead of a crawl space that I had eliminated the need for pipe insulation, yearly crawl space spraying, and mold and mildew problems. Okay, I'm off this subject for now because I am getting cramps in my neck and back relating this all to you!

Please learn from my mistakes. That $3000 could have paid for my yard to be professionally landscaped or could have been a nice start to a college fund for the grandchildren (or even a nice gift for the church building fund). Thanks again for all your concern and your prayers, they are much appreciated.

I Did it!

Yep Y'all, I called in the big guns to handle the little gray furries. It breaks my heart to think they might be hurt but they have got to go. I'm so exhausted from battling them and the creepy ones that I'm what my mom use to call 'punch drunk!' The man promised to be here tomorrow at noon; hope I don't get ripped off. I know that's not a good attitude but it's like every time I need to have something done around this house I find the worst possible people to do it. It just seems like if you're over 60 and have a Southern accent trades people think you're stupid. Anyway, thanks for caring y'all.

It is certainly amazing how many people have contacted me about my critter troubles to offer good thoughts and prayers! So many nice people from around the world; isn't the Internet awesome? You never have to be alone anymore. I feel so lucky to be 'computer savvy' at my age. I've been dealing with them for more than half my life and find it truly perplexing the shear volume of baby boomer's who don't know the first thing about the Internet or computers. I would be so lonely if I didn't have all of you! Keep in touch!

Hybrid Gift

Hey Y'all. Here are some photos of the hybrid album I made for my friend's birthday. It is the first project I have used traditional scrapbooking on in months and months. My hands didn't do too bad but I am really rusty at traditional scrapping! This little gift was a big hit at the birthday luncheon and I just wonder what it would have been like if it had turned out as I expected it to. (Where were Ms. Vicki's elves when I needed them?)

Album front and a couple of the inside photos. The photos were all digitally decorated and enhanced.

I found some background paper that looked like old sheet music. I was trying for the "Vicki Chrisman" look but no one can duplicate her talent. I matched the acrylics to my friend's birthday outfit and painted the outside cover before gluing on the sheet music. Those tiny little buttons were a real pain (literately) to sew on! The Glimmer Mist was beautiful on the friendship paper and the rub-ons went on really easily. My photography skills leave a lot to be desired, especially since I have the jitters when holding something ;)

I had quite an exasperating day Friday and I will post the story when I am calmer about the subject (snakes). Thanks to all who have kept me in their thoughts and prayers since then! It's just going to take a while before I can reasonably recount the day for you. The squirrels are not cooperating with my need for sanity either! The young ones won't leave and play right over my head when I'm in the study. They also peek in through the sidelights at the front door to see if I'm coming back here so they can go back in the attic! Here's one of them:




As I was standing in the driveway waving to my grandchildren as they were leaving yesterday, the mother or father ran within a foot of me, up the Crepe Myrtle and onto the roof! They are not afraid of me at all. This is sooo frustrating; I'm calling Critter Control in the morning and I don't care anymore about how they will get rid of them.

Effort Required

Hey Y'all! My title today refers to a muse by Rozanne Paxman, otherwise known as "Ro," who is the driving force behind one of my all time favorite sites, Scrap Girls. Ro sends us some great life "muses" along with tutorials, layouts, ideas, new products, beautiful layouts, and freebies in the Scrap Girls daily newsletter. Effort Required is the title of today's muse and it just struck a cord in me that wanted to share it with you. It begins: "I want to be on the other side of tomorrow." Isn't that an intriguing opening sentence? Don't you just have to know what Ro has to say to us? Ro has posted it on her blog so that I can refer you there to read the entire muse. Go there NOW! You can come back here afterwards and continue to read the rest of my post. And if you can't figure out what the photo in the layout is (I didn't know until she told me), it is of a cactus bloom! I know that after reading just this one muse you will be compelled to read more and in order to do that you need to go to the Scrap Girls site and sign up for their newsletter. I'm begging you to do this for yourself, you will never regret it! I have learned more from Scrap Girls than I learned in my month long Photoshop online tutorial! But I believe the greatest gift I have received from Scrap Girls is Ro's muses. She makes me think. She makes me want better for myself. She makes me want to BE with capital letters! Yes, she has touched my heart so many times in the last three months that it seems like she has a window on my life and is writing her muses just for me! Thank you, dear Ro, for being you and sharing those little bits and pieces of yourself with me.

I've been working on a hybrid scrap project this week. It is an album of last year's birthday luncheon for a gift at this year's birthday luncheon. I just thought it would be nice for my friend to look back at us a year ago and if all goes well, I might make it a tradition. I've been so pleased that my fingers have allowed me to paint today; tomorrow I will cut and paste! I hope to have it done and photographed by tomorrow afternoon since the birthday luncheon is this Friday (I'm no Vicki Chrisman with all those little elves helping out [that she says she doesn't have-ha!] to speed the project along). I'll be sure and share it with you even if it doesn't come out as good as I want it to, as it will be the first large project I've done in my studio since last fall. Speaking of Vicki C, you should check out her blog from yesterday; great project Vicki (as usual) I love the colors and the Crafty Secrets image!

Well, it's tomorrow already and I need to catch up on my TV before I sleep!

PS: Oh, My, Gosh! I forgot to tell you that my darling little grandson, Joshua, made the winning home run for his team tonight! Woo Hoo! Way to go Joshua!

Arrrrrrrrgh!

Those blasted squirrels! The noise coming from the attic has been unbearable the last few days and now I know why! Since 'He' found a nice warm place to invite 'Her' to they started their family early . . . I now have an attic full of teenage squirrels! How do I know this, you innocently ask? Because I went up again a few minutes ago and low and behold - there they were sitting, watching, and waiting to see what I would do! %^&*$#(*&@#@# they evidently have gotten use to my voice because it took them a minute to realize I wasn't playing with them when I YELLED AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS AT THEM! And since they were born into the smell of mothballs and cat fur, it doesn't bother them either! Now what? How in the world do you catch one squirrel much less several squirrels? I guess if I wasn't so scared they will chew through electrical wiring and set my home on fire, I would be laughing instead of crying. I'm going to put earplugs in and work on a birthday gift.

My Boy For An Overnight!

Hey Y'all! My youngest grandson, Joshua, has been spending the day with me and now we are in the midst of an 'overnighter!' So far we have played picture dominoes, regular dominoes, the memory game, and the latest thing was this marvelous layout he made in my scrap room. I put all the stuff out and he chose the papers, photos, and elements that he wanted to use. I think he did a great job for an 8 year old! He asked that I post it on the Web so here it is!

Finished the Color Challenge Freebie!

Woo Hoo! Finished the Stone Accent Studio's April Color Challenge kit! It has more stuff in it than a preacher after a "Pot Luck Sunday" afternoon! Besides the usual butterflies and papers I made some 3 part envelopes that you can 'stuff' with notes, flowers, or anything you'd like and I even included the envelope front if you want to use one that way. There are two kinds of journal spots (for a total of eight), 3 flowers, an upper case alpha on separate layers in a .psd file, and a bonus folder with a layering page and surprise 'King!' It took me 10 minutes to upload it to 4Shared but that was only at 40kps; it's almost 52mb! So, I want to see some luv when you download this baby! Ms. Vicki C: You need to download some digi-kits so that you can practice on the hybrids for Scrapbook Dimensions and you can't get much cheaper than free!

My adorable grandson, Joshua, called me Monday night to let me know that his team won their baseball game 10-7. He loves that game so much and is so proud to be a Rockie! He said he wants to come down and spend the night with me this weekend! He hasn't asked to do that since he was a toddler except when his sister or mother were going to come too, so I didn't put too much stock in it. He then called me back last night, Tuesday, to tell me he would be coming Friday and he was going to bring his sleeping bag so he could sleep in my room, on the floor, next to my bed. He's so sweet about wanting to be close when he goes to sleep; he knows that I have to sleep in my special adjustable twin bed and there just isn't room enough for him. So we are making big plans to spend some quality time together! Joshua, his Mom, and I all completely forgot that she has to have another colonoscopy Friday afternoon! So he will be coming on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to this rare treat!

Guess what? I almost caught that blasted squirrel with my bare hands this morning! Don't know what the heck I would have done if I had, but I did try! LOL! The sucker is getting so fat that he (she?) can't squeeze into the attic as fast as it was doing and needed to stop and chew out some more space and he left his hind legs hanging over the gutter! Wonder what he would have thought if I had been quick enough to catch a little foot? I guess I'm going to have to find something to put down on the ceiling boards in the attic and make my way over to the hole and put the trap in front of it the next time he leaves. Wish me luck! If I don't get him soon my entire roof is going to collapse on me since he keeps chewing a bigger holes; he has been up there almost six months.

Got to go fix me some supper since I skipped eating today to work on the kit (which is probably very good for me to do). Have a great week and keep in touch!

Hey Y'all!

Hey Y'all! Sorry to be such a stick in the mud B O R E these days. I've been busy with the daily chores of life and trying to do some designing and a couple of layouts. I did get a bunch of things designed for the SAS April Color Challenge and when it's totally finished I'll post the link here of course! I did a layout to submit to a military challenge at SAS too; it's my dad when he was just 22 years old and in the Army. I'm glad he sent me these photos a few years back because all the photos that he and my mom had have gone to live somewhere else and probably never to be seen again by me or my family! I have had a hard time deciding what was too much and what was too little for this particular layout; never seemed to have that problem before. Dad certainly was a nice looking man. He's almost 89 now but was still youthful looking and vibrant until a few years ago when he was put in a nursing home.

Hey Y'all! I'm back with an editorial. If you don't want to hear about what's happening in the United States with Christianity, move on. I'm not going to go deep into details but am going to send you off to read a very astute, intelligent, and Christian scrapbooking lady's blog. I left a comment on her post that I'll reproduce here for you:

"Oh MY God! HE is my God. I stand by that emphatically. I haven't watched Oprah regularly for over a year but when my daughter started telling me that Oprah was touting a New Religion, I balked. Oprah? Not the warm and loving, Christian woman I had come to love as if we actually knew each other? Then Obama was endorsed and I kept getting all those negative emails about him. I decided to do some research too, Ro. I am appalled at what has happened to Oprah and that so many are blindly following her movement because they have always seen her (just as I have) as an expert on love, sanity, health, and politics. I'm praying to My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to help us wake up our fellow Christians and set them on the correct path to Salvation with a capital "J!"
Thank you Ro. You really do have a way about you that makes me open my eyes and question life. Again, thank you.

I've Been Remiss & I've Been Tagged!

Hey Y'all! I've not been a very good blogger lately. It's just that I really haven't had much to say other than the blasted squirrel is upstairs rearranging his love nest with his current fling. Did I tell you that my bedroom smells of moth balls!? They are suppose to keep squirrels away, nuf said.

My daughter came down today and we did a little bit of shopping and stopped in at the Dollar Tree on the way home. My goodness! Every time I go in there I find some real gems! Look at these chipboard albums! Chipboard, not paper, Chipboard! The larger one came just as you see it and you can combine it with another one because they link together. The smaller one has all these extra elements to go with it. I plan on altering them and making one into a birthday album for a friend (a'la Vicki C!)


The only thing that has to be added to the tiny one, whose pages are 3 1/4" square, are photos and ribbon to bind the pages together.

My sweet friend Ms. Vicki Chrisman has "tagged" me so I am going to try and answer these 8 questions (wish me luck) and I have to tag 4 more people who have blogs which isn't too easy for me:

1. Four jobs I have held: 1st was a Howard Johnson's waitress after school; 2nd was as a nurses' aide in a mental hospital between my junior and senior year of high school; 3rd was the Service Department manager at a local furniture store (sounds grander than it was-I had one guy to send out) ; 4th was a "front office" worker at our local GEM Store (which I think was the forerunner of the warehouse style stores we have today). The most interesting job I held was as the Security Manager of a large Richmond bank.
2. Four movies I could watch over and over: 1st Shrek; 2nd Gone With The Wind; 3rd The High and the Mighty (old black and white version with John "Duke" Wayne) 4th Any Mel Gibson flick. I really don't watch them much nowadays-I fall asleep if I sit still too long! LOL
3. Four places I have lived: 1st Richmond, Virginia; 2nd Henrico Country, Virginia; 3rd Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; 4th Chester, Virginia. I stayed in Virginia until 1991 when I moved to my present home in the suburbs of Charlotte, NC.
4. Four TV shows I like: 1st Grey's Anatomy; 2nd All the CSI's; 3rd The Shield; 4th Nip/Tuck; 5th Battlestar Gallactica; and all the reality shows! I'm a TV nut!
5. Four people who email me regularly: 1st Jan; 2nd Carol; 3rd Jodi; 4th Ed
6. Four favorite foods: 1st Pasta; 2nd Butter Pecan Ice Cream; 3rd Pizza; 4th Popcorn (that was harder to choose than I thought it would be)
7. Four places I'd rather be: 1st Outer Banks of North Carolina with someone who loves me; 2nd Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with Kim, Joshua, Suzy, and Tabba; 3rd Driving anywhere in my new Toyota 4Runner (this is fantasy folks-I don't own a car) 4th Right here at home in front of my computer designing scrapbook elements.
